Human Rights Center “Viasna”
The Viasna Human Rights Center, established in Belarus in 1996, is a prominent organisation dedicated to defending human rights, documenting violations, and supporting victims of political repression. Known for its critical work in promoting justice and civil liberties, Viasna has been a consistent advocate for democratic freedoms in a country where dissent is often met with harsh punishment.
Marfa Rabkova, a coordinator of Viasna's Volunteer Service, has played a crucial role in mobilising volunteers to document human rights abuses, particularly during the protests following the 2020 Belarusian presidential election. Her work involved training volunteers to monitor demonstrations, report on police brutality, and support victims of state violence. Due to her tireless efforts, Marfa has become a target of the Belarusian regime, resulting in her arrest and a lengthy prison sentence on politically motivated charges.
Viasna's mission is closely tied to Marfa, as her imprisonment highlights the dangerous climate for human rights defenders in Belarus. Despite these threats, the organization continues to campaign for her release, amplifying her voice and advocating for justice. Through Viasna’s relentless commitment, Marfa Rabkova's story stands as a symbol of the broader struggle for human rights in Belarus and the need for global solidarity in the face of repression.
